SC Parents Anonymous Affiliates Celebrate National Parent Leadership Month |

Greenville, SC A Child’s Haven A Child’s Haven held two Parent Leadership Recognition Events, a brunch at their main center and a dinner at a local restaurant.
Twenty-six Parent Leader nominees received Recognition Certificates from Parents Anonymous of South Carolina®, Inc.. The parents had completed an eight week skill building course. The course focused on leadership through engagement with, and support of, other parents and a commitment to their parenting role. Parents were encouraged to continue growing in their roles as nurturing parents and parent leaders.

Greenville, SC Greenville Rape Crisis and Child Abuse Center The GRCCAC held a “Sharing of Love Celebration” to recognize and honor parents who gained leadership skills through training programs. Parents received certificates of recognition, “goody bags” and memo boards with positive parenting tips.
The children of participating parents at Woodstream Apartments invited them to a special Valentine’s Day Parent Recognition program. The children made formal presentations about why they were proud of their parents and what they loved about them.
Parent group facilitator, Sandra Moffitt, spoke of the desire to focus on the successes of parents so that through positive reinforcement, parent leaders will extend their skills to the Greenville community, accepting roles that creating positive change in the systems that support children and families.

Myrtle Beach, SC Parents Anonymous of Horry County Parents, children and staff in Horry County came together for a dinner and night of “Honoring Parent Achievement and Leadership.” Parent Leaders conducted the event which featured the children and a parent speaker. Among the highlights were: a marriage proposal that was accepted and created a new family; tears of joy and happiness at many points of the program, and flowers to Dr. Evelyn Califf for her 50 years of “caring about children and families.” |

Anderson, SC Foothills Alliance The Foothills Alliance held a banquet honoring all Parents Anonymous® group participants, one parent from each of five school districts at banquet and one “Parents Anonymous® Parent Leader of the Year.” Anderson’s Mayor and County Council issued a NPLM Proclamation and local media coverage included news releases, interviews with parents leaders and a letter to the editor.

Midlands (Columbia, SC) Parenting Partners
A Parents Anonymous® Appreciation Luncheon attended by local partner agencies featured the presentation of Parent Leader Recognition Certificates to parent leaders from local parent aide and parent education/parent support groups. Local businesses contributed gifts for the occasion.

Pee Dee (Florence, SC) Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic/Sexual Assault The Pee Dee Coalition held a two-day Parent Leadership Institute during which they honored and recognized the leadership of parents. They also recognized employers who have allowed parents time off to attend parent education/parents support groups. The Coalition partnered with parent leaders to initiate public awareness of February as National Parent Leadership Month.

Spartanburg, SC Family Care Council At a special luncheon on Feb. 23, 2007, Parents Anonymous of South Carolina and The Family Care Council of Spartanburg honored ten parents nominated by principals and guidance counselors of their children's schools. The parents were recognized for their leadership in school and home — leadership demonstrated despite having to overcome physical and economic handicaps. The honored parents had spent countless volunteer hours in the schools to ensure the best education for their children. Each parent received a certificate of recognition and a bumper sticker designed especially for them. The luncheon was held at the facilities of the Mary Black Foundation and was attended by the honorees, their children and leaders from churches, schools, and the community. Thomas McMeekin, a member of the District 7 School Board, was the featured speaker.

Kingstree, SC Parents Anonymous of Williamsburg County
The highlight in Williamsburg County during NPLM was a recognition dinner at which Parents Anonymous® parent leaders received Parent Leader Recognition Certificates. The Mayor signed a NPLM proclamation and the media received information and press releases on NPLM.
