Sharon Kirby, local Parent Leader; recipient of state and national

Parents Anonymous® Jolly K Award

Sharon Kirby will be presented with the 2007 Jolly K Parent Leader Award on February 12, 2007 as part of the Parents Anonymous® National Training Institute held annually in Washington D.C.  The Jolly K Award is given to a Parents Anonymous® Parent who exemplifies strong Parent Leadership as first modeled by Jolly K., the founding parent of Parents Anonymous®. Her courageous search for help for herself and her family created a national movement that has provided help, support, strength and hope to hundreds of thousands of families since 1969 through community based Parents Anonymous® Groups.

Sharon Kirby, parent of two children, recognized a need for support for parents and helped to establish a Parents Anonymous® Group in the Charleston Tri-County Area in 1999.   She offered her home as an initial meeting place and boldly talked about Parents Anonymous® to other parents who visited a park nearby, garnering support for herself and reaching out to others experiencing similar parenting concerns.  In this respect and much like Jolly K., Sharon partnered with the group facilitator to create her own support system, serving as the Parent Group Leader of her group.  Sharon has taken on a wide range of leadership roles in the organization including the start-up of the first South Carolina Parent Leadership Team in 2000,

serving as the Co-Chair of 2007 National Parent Leadership Month and the "Parents Leading the Way" Conference.

Donna Xenakis, Tri-County Parents Anonymous® Coordinator states, “Sharon has been and continues to be a wonderful resource to me as a staff member, assisting me in developing PowerPoint presentations, flyers, bookmarks, and brochures.  Her input is truly valuable to me, and as co-chair on the SC 2007 National Parent Leadership Month and Parents Leading the Way Conference, I have seen her step forward and take on new challenges.  She is above all a real role model and advocate for other parents.”
